Shwayze: I was a fan of his band back in the day. It wasn't until I found out he made rap music that made us kinda get together. I heard he made other music than his rock 'n' roll stuff, and like I came out on one of his sets one time and busted a freestyle. I don't think he knew who I was just yet, so I think that was my way of showing him. So then one time at a party, I went and I was just like, "Let's make some music." I went to some other parties, and he was like, "Don't come up to me at parties. If you're serious, just come make music," and I did at one point, and we made our first collaboration. And then from that moment on, we just kept kickin' it and making songs whenever we could.

In the first five minutes of MTV's new reality show "Buzzin'," which stars rising Malibu rapper Shwayze and his ne'er-do-well producer Cisco Adler, Shwayze's faced with an only-in-L.A. Sophie's Choice that could break his fledgling career.

On one hand, he's booked to play a potentially lucrative Super Bowl party gig in Phoenix where sponsors from Pontiac want to talk song placements in an ad. On the other, he's due in Malibu at 8 a.m. the next day for a court date involving an old fake ID he bought on Alvarado Street.

Missing the former will infuriate his new taskmaster, label boss Jordan Schur of Geffen affiliate Suretone Records. Missing the latter could land him in jail.
Fortunately, a white knight arrives in the form of a rented Hummer that whisks the 22-year-old back to L.A. from the party in time to be sentenced for a misdemeanor and 30 days of trash-pickup duty on the beach (he also landed the ad campaign).

It's the kind of deus ex machina that seems to exist only in the rarefied world of MTV-reality. But for Shwayze it's a perk of being a new kind of aspiring pop idol -- one whose legal foibles, girlfriend drama and everyday goofiness are all potentially star-making fodder.

"We were nervous about 'Buzzin'," Shwayze said in the Pomona Fairplex parking lot after his Warped Tour set last month. "It's reality TV, and we'd seen all those shows."

But Adler, a tabloid and reality-TV veteran himself, is quick to remind Shwayze of how little he really has to worry about, "Fool, you live in Malibu, and the fridge is full."

BallerStatus.com: So, what's up?

Shwayze: Good question (laughs). Right now we got the reality show we're shooting through MTV, July 23rd. It's called "Buzzin'" and it's pretty much about everything -- us touring, us with the radio, my whole crew. It's me, my boy Cisco Adler (he's my producer), my boy and Warren (tour manager) and my manager Jordan Schur. It's about the rising and the merging of a new artist, so it takes you from the beginning to where we are now. I don't know where we are, we're probably still at the beginning (laughs).

BallerStatus.com: So you blew up first in Cali, right?

Shwayze: Cali of course. That was our foundation. We started out playing shows locally. We played hundreds of shows, so when we got signed we already had a good fan base. And the record was already recorded, which was cool because we recorded in my boys Cisco's crib and that's how it started. But these last couple of months have been the craziest, how much work we've had to do. I see a lot of difference in the shows now too, there's a lot more people. ]]>

Shwayze Interview Interview: Shwayze, Malibu's latest hip-hop sensation
Albeit sharing the same area code as multi-millionaire Hollywood actors, Malibu resident Shwayze was raised in its trailer park community, and his only steady income came via his handyman grandfather. If he wasn't fixing light bulbs, the laid-back teenager was out on the sunny beaches, embracing life with the babes & booze. 3 years later, things haven't changed much - except the rapper now has a full-time job in music, and it's only fit for a self-titled debut to pay homage to an all-day-and-into-the-night party lifestyle. Along for the ride are his mates DJ Skeet Skeet, a "cool ass dude on the 1's and 2's", and wingman Cisco Adler, who sings and co-wrote all the songs on the album - ridiculously catchy and overspilling with the warmth of an endless summer (Listen to first single "Buzzin"). The Renaissance man himself popped by in the midst of Warped Tour to chat about the new record, which comes out in August.

On first listen, "Buzzin'" sounds uncannily like something from Gym Class Heroes. What do you make of this comparison?

I just recently met Gym Class on Warped Tour. We've been compared to them a lot. We definitely weren't going for that, but I'm not mad at the comparison because I like them.

How was it like when you met Cisco?

I met Cisco in Malibu randomly at a party where I drunkenly asked him to make music together. I heard he made music, and at the time I was desperate to make music with someone because I wasn't doing much. So he went, "Stop asking me when you're drunk!" I asked him a few times at different parties, and he said, "If you're really serious about making music, just come over when you're not partying." Then we made our first track.

Let's talk more about the record. Was it easy to make? How long did the songwriting and recording process take?

We made the whole record on a whim. After our first track together, I kinda slept on the couch and even offered to intern because I liked all the music he was working on. So over a time of seven months, we made 50 or so songs. When we got signed, we already had our album recorded. It was really organic - I bet you can hear that when you listen to the record.

Which are your personal favorite tracks off the album?

'Flashlight', because it's the only feature on the record with Dave Navarro, 'Lost My Mind' because it's different, and I don't think you would normally hear a rapper sing to that kind of a track! Also, 'Corona and Lime', which is our next single. It wasn't supposed to come to me [actually], it was supposed to go to another artist, but he rejected it so I got to use it. That was one of the last songs that made it to the record.

I’m in the ‘bu, Malibu, chillin’.

Are you having a Bud? Seriously? You’re in “the ‘bu? That’s awesome… Ok, let’s talk about your name, Shwayze. Where does your name come from?
Well it comes from my boy Cisco. We were making music and were five songs in and I was like, “yo- I need a name and Cisco came out with, “what about Shwayze? And I was like, “interesting… and everybody started calling me Shwayze.

You should give Cisco an MC name.
Haha, yeah I should. Dick Charming.

Amazing. So you are playing The Warped Tour. When is your first show?

This weekend! In California! It’s really crazy. This is my first tour ever, I gotta get packed. I gotta get ready. I’m really excited for this tour.

The magnificent interior and sound of Radio City Music Hall gave it all a glorious feeling, as the longtime kings of gloom played a masterful set in front of thousands dressed in their blackest attire.

30 years have done nothing to take the pain, hurt, and desperation out of Robert Smith's wail. The legendary frontman sounded as good as ever, while the rest of the band built a powerful wall of sound behind him.

Seeing a band like this, so long past their prime is often just a disappointing nostalgia trip. The good feeling hardly comes from the performance, but instead from the memories it creates. The nostalgia was definitely present during The Cure's performance last night, but there was much more to the good feelings created than a few memories. Even if you never shut yourself in your room listening to "Boys Don't Cry" on repeat while dealing with the most depressing of your teen years, it was a great show. Not once did it feel like a group of old men trying to bank in on their past by just going through the measures. And with the three encores and a set that lasted as long as a major league baseball game, they better have been enjoying it.

It probably didn't need to be so long, and the set often didn't flow as well as the best of their records (often lumping together 2 excitement-inducing hits, and then following with an extremely depressing deep cut). But how can one complain about overload, especially after the 1-2 punches of "Pictures of You and "Lullaby," and "In between Days" and "Just Like Heaven." Just watching Robert Smith sing "Close To Me" from the side balconies was worth the price of admission.

The Cure Live Review
By JON PARELES
Published: June 23, 2008

There’s no question that Robert Smith has one of rock’s most irritating voices. It’s quavery and strangled, yelpy when he raises it and morose when he doesn’t, the voice of a hypersensitive high-school poet who cherishes his own wounded feelings. But if that voice were any less irritating, his songs for the Cure wouldn’t be anywhere near as durable.

Rahav Segev for The New York Times

The Cure, led by Robert Smith on lead vocals and guitar, played Radio City Music Hall on Saturday night.

Mr. Smith has been agonizing over love, loss and insecurity since the Cure released its first single in 1978, and the band’s mope-rock has persisted through eras from new wave to emo and beyond. His voice, needy and unkempt and immediate, separates the songs from maudlin pop. Who else could sound less than sappy when singing (in “The Perfect Boy,? a new song), “The two of us is all there is/The rest is just a dream.?

At Radio City Music Hall on Saturday night the band methodically laid out each part of its musical patterns: drumbeats from Jason Cooper, bass lines from Simon Gallup, overlapping guitar hooks from Porl Thompson and Mr. Smith. The band relies on the orderliness shared by Minimalism and dance music, letting Mr. Smith’s voice smudge and puncture the musical grids. In its current four-man lineup, the Cure can pound and drive like a punky new wave band, particularly in the songs it has been releasing as previews of its 13th album, due in September. More often it lets the guitars reverberate, with the music swelling to match the yearning in Mr. Smith’s lyrics.

Mr. Smith, a portly figure with a mop of jet-black hair, was an unassuming frontman who embodied the shyness of his words. He blurted out his vocals and danced gawkily in the few songs where he didn’t play guitar. At one point he started speaking nervously onstage, chatting about the weather, calling his patter “rubbish,? then concluding, “This is why I don’t talk.?

The Radio City Music Hall concert was the Cure’s second New York show this week, after a Madison Square Garden date on Friday. Knowing that it has obsessive fans, the band changed much of its set from the night before. Songs were more or less grouped by topic. The set started with lyrics about endings and mortality — “Out of This World,? “Want? — and moved to unhappy love songs, nightmares like “Lullaby? and “Kyoto Song? and happier love songs like “Just Like Heaven.?

But then the Cure moved to another topic: war, with video screens showing soldiers and destruction in “One Hundred Years.? The Cure’s first single, “Killing an Arab? — originally a postpunk condensation of “The Stranger? by Albert Camus — also took on wartime connotations. The concert ended with the gloom of “A Forest? and the dire drone of “Forever.? The Cure was not about to provide anything as poppy as a happy ending. ]]>

Yes, they have become older and those wild-screamo-days seem to be over yet. Their new style is definitely so much better. The new record contains twelve amazing songs. The most outstanding tracks are called "Two As One" - a powerful mid-tempo Rock song with a great refrain and slamming drum work. "Worlds Away" does blow me away.
